The Swiss Museum of Transport opened on 1 July 1959 after two years of construction and quickly became the most visited museum in the country. 1969 saw the addition of the first and, to this day, only large planetarium in Switzerland, as well as the restaurant and office building. Complementing the other exhibition spaces, the Aviation and Space Travel Hall was opened in 1972. Then between 1979 and 1985, the museum acquired the Hans Erni Museum, the second Rail Transport Hall (replacing the open-air railway area), and the Navigation, Cableways and Tourism Hall. A further expansion came in 1996 with the incorporation of the Filmtheatre cinema. Marking the museum's 50th anniversary, 2009 saw the iconic Road Transport Hall inaugurated and the entrance area with conference centre, catering facilities and shop redesigned. Lastly, the Swiss Chocolate Adventure visitor experience (2014) and Media World (2016) now form part of the museum complex.
