The Federal Roads Office (FEDRO) and the Swiss Museum of Transport are presenting a new exhibition on the construction project for the second Gotthard tunnel. This exhibition highlights the impact of the project on the region, the stories of the people working on the construction site, the current challenges in tunnelling and the development of the Swiss motorway network.
The centrepiece of the new exhibition is a replica safety tunnel with voice announcements and a detailed model of the tunnel boring machine - the original is an impressive 150 metres long and 12 metres wide. The explanations accompanying these exhibits provide fascinating facts and information about the work inside the mountain. The exhibition goes far beyond the static: interactive elements and multimedia stations convey the history, facts and figures of the major project. The exhibitors are also keen to get young people interested in the diverse and challenging work in the infrastructure sector. Informative and authentic videos illustrate the interesting activities in this field.
