Pulsars are among the most fascinating objects we can find in the universe. They are the remains of stars that have exploded as supernovae. Due to the enormous explosion, the extremely dense core of the star survives, spinning around its axis at high speed, acquiring an enormous density that strongly magnetises the material consisting mainly of degenerate neutrons.
Pulsars emit radiation of all kinds in a periodic and predictable way, making these objects ideal laboratories to study the densest and most magnetic forms of matter in the universe. They make it possible to study different properties of our galaxy, as well as fundamental laws of physics.
Eduardo Rubio Herrera (Guatemala, 1978) is an astrophysicist specialising in the final stages of stellar evolution. His scientific interest is in compact objects. Eduardo has conducted research on various topics, including neutron stars, black holes and variable stars, publishing scientific articles and participating in numerous national and international conferences.
He has organised projects such as the Guatemalan Schools of Astrophysics (GUASA, 2013-2017) and taught courses at Bachelor's and Master's level in different areas of physics and astrophysics. As a passionate science communicator, he has given lectures and published popular science articles in newspapers and magazines of different countries, focussing not only on modern astronomy but also on the Mayan astronomy of his home country.
Eduardo is an individual member of the International Astronomical Union, as well as a member of other professional and amateur astronomical associations. He currently works at the planetarium of the Swiss Museum of Transport in Lucerne, Switzerland. At the same time, he works as a university lecturer and is involved as a science educator on educational expeditions to remote areas of our planet.
Dr Rubio Herrera hopes that this presentation will be an opportunity for all attendees to learn more about these fascinating objects in an entertaining and enjoyable way.
The presentation will be held in English.
